The Local Currency project seems to have finally found a solution in joining a broader, already established system, according to a 1/29/13 email from Langdon Roberts. Text follows:

Hello New Earthers,

Happy 2013! After a long break for the holidays and some major re-structuring, New Earth Exchange is returning to its mission of supporting a just and sustainable economy for Santa Cruz County.

The biggest new development is that we are now a part of Bay Bucks, a larger trade exchange, serving the greater San Francisco Bay area!  Please check them out at Bay-Bucks.com. Those of you who have already registered as New Earth Exchange members will need to register as Bay-Bucks members instead, in order to continue to trade. We think that you will find that their website is very user-friendly.

Here's how it works: You go to Bay-Bucks.com and sign up as a Bay-Bucks member (currently there is no sign-up fee, but eventually there will be, so don't wait too long). Then we contact you to answer any questions you may have about using the online trading system, and help you to determine what you might be able to purchase through the exchange and connect you with potential trading partners. Soon we will begin hosting social and networking events, so that you can meet other members in person and develop a stronger sense of community.

Those of you who signed up as New Earth Exchange members under the old system will need to re-register. The bay-bucks system has different fees and requirements than the old New Earth system, so please read everything over carefully. For those of you who do not wish to participate in Bay-Bucks directly (it may not be appropriate for some micro-businesses), you are still welcome to come to networking events and to use the paper currency (Sand Dollars) as soon as we can raise the funding needed to print it.

If you have questions, please check out NewEarthExchange.org or call us at 831-476-7529

Thank you,
Langdon and Daz

Hey everyone,

I went down to the Subrosa anarchist collective for their scheduled class on how to start and run a free school, but it was canceled. Regardless, it got me thinking about it more.

All we need to make this work are enough members with a particular skill (i.e. sewing, canning, water-harvesting, permaculture, etc.) who would be willing to lead an informal yet effective class on that particular topic. So far I've only gotten about 3 or 4 replies from the 72 registered members.

I really think this could work for our skills training efforts and there's already a proven model down in Santa Cruz (Free Skool Santa Cruz). So how 'bout it, people?

Thanks,
Steve
